Ram Setu Bridge The Mysterious Thing to Know About Ram Setu Bridge

Ram Setu Bridge: Ram Setu known as Rama’s Bridge or Adam’s Bridge, is a popular place to see in Rameshwaram as considered to be one of the holiest sites for Hindu devotees.

It is made up of Limestone Shoals that connect the Rameswaram Island of Tamil Nadu to Mannar Island of Sri Lanka with a long distance of 48 km. It is supposed to be the former land connection between India and Sri Lanka. Rameswaram temple records say that Ram Setu Bridge was entirely above sea level until it has broken into a cyclone in 1480.

Historical References

In the ancient Indian Sanskrit epic Ramayana, Valmiki writes about Sethubandhanam, which connected India with Lanka (kingdom of the king Asura Ravana).

According to the legends, it was constructed by God Rama through his ape-men army or Vanara army to reached Lanka and to rescued the Goddess Sita from the demon Ravana and supposed to end cruelties.

It is mentioned in various texts in brief about this bridge. Including religious scriptures as well as research books and maps. Also mentioned by the Persian geographer Ibn Khordadbeh in the book Roads and Kingdoms (850 AD).

He refers to it as Set Bandhani or Bridge of the sea. This can be seen in the maps of Dutch cartographers made in 1747, where this area has been shown as Ramancoil means Rama Temple.

That is also known as Adam’s Bridge. It got its name from Islamic traditions that the Garden of Eden was located in Sri Lanka. A Sri Lankan mountain with a footprint-shaped mark at its peak is often called Adam’s Peak (where Adam supposedly fell to earth).

After his expulsion from the Garden of Eden, he went to mainland Asia from Sri Lanka. This leads to the name Adam’s Bridge. An Iranian scholar Abu Rayhan al-Biruni was the first person to describe it. A British cartographer in 1804 prepared the earliest map that calls this area by the name Adam’s Bridge.

Some controversies over the origin of this Bridge

There are many controversies about the creation of this Adam’s Bridge because the believers who believe that Lord Rama created this Bridge refuse the natural origin of Adam’s Bridge.

Also at the same time, some people like S.M. Ramasamy stated that the carbon dating of the beaches roughly matches the dates of Ramayana and its further link is to explore.

Some knowledgeable peoples have stated that the ancient beliefs of bridge construction by Lord Rama could be true, like S. Badrinarayanan, a former director of Geological Survey of India, a publication of the National Remote Sensing Agency, the Madras High Court, and even a Science Channel series What On Earth.

Archaeological Survey of India has not found any evidence that this Bridge is not a natural formation. In 2007, there was a huge controversy over the existence of Ram Setu during the Sethusamundram Project in Tamil Nadu.

The Archaeological Survey of India and the Government of India had updated to Supreme Court that there is no historical proof that Lord Rama had made this.

In recent days, HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said Indian engineers built Ram Setu, and Sanskrit was the oldest language in the world. The minister said during his address Sanskrit was not for India alone but for the world as a whole. “America is running a center on Sanskrit from 1986, Germany is researching Vedas.

So why are we not doing research on the knowledge which has started from our land? We will only notice when the rest of the world will point to us.”

Besides this, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had filed an appeal looking to declare Ram Setu as a national heritage monument. But senior academic and former Vice-Chancellor of Alagappa University A.Ramasamy has moved to Supreme Court, saying the Ram Setu or Adam’s Bridge does not meet the requirements of an ancient monument.

Also said only a permanent structure could be declared an ancient monument and Adam’s Bridge is not a permanent structure.

Finally, the Government of India has approved the underwater study of the Ram Setu Bridge to determine its origin. Union Minister of State for Tourism and Culture Mr. Prahlad Singh Patel had said that the world should get information about Ram Setu through evidence based on scientific research.

The central board on archaeology, which functions under the Archaeological Survey of India, has approved this exploration project. The project is expected to run for three years by the end of March 2021.

An initial survey had done to check the habitation. A geophysical survey will be used to understand the subsurface structure. As per officials, the initial budget for the project will be Rs. 10 Lacs. Ram Setu was human-made or not that was always being part of the controversy.
